How Does LED Lighting Work?

LED Lights are increasingly being offered as a replacement for other types of traditional lighting, such as incandescent, halogen or fluorescent lamps. An LED, also known as a ”Light Emitting Diode”, can be translated as a luminescent or light emitting diode. LED lamps are a form of solid-state lighting. This means that in LED lighting, semiconductors are used to generate light instead of a filament (incandescent lamps) or gas discharge (fluorescent lamps). By allowing current to flow through these semiconductors, these materials produce light. The color of this light depends on the type of semiconductor used. The advantage of this type of lighting is that it generates little heat and is more resistant to shock, vibration and wear.

How does LED Light Produce Different Colors?

LED lamps can emit light in many different colors. The color that an LED can emit depends on the semiconductor used to generate the light. For example, LED bulbs that produce multiple colors are often a combination of different LEDs side by side. By stringing together a red, green, and blue diode, any color in the color spectrum can be composed. These are the RGB (red, green, blue) LED lamps.

Why are LED Light Different from Traditional Lights?

In most cases, it is the toxic substance “mercury”. When the electrons in the current passed through the lamp collide with a mercury atom, the electrons are knocked out of their orbit. In doing so, it generates energy. The energy released is ultraviolet radiation. Since we humans cannot perceive ultraviolet radiation, a layer has been applied to the inside of the tube that can convert the ultraviolet radiation into warm, visible light.

Longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs.
Lower energy consumption than incandescent lamps.

Halogen Lamps

Halogen lamps work essentially like incandescent lamps. However, halogen lamps get very hot. For this reason, halogen lamps must always be equipped with quartz glass. This type of glass is heat resistant to prevent cracking. There is a gas in the glass bulb to prevent stains on the surface.

Pros and cons of LED lighting

If you look at LED lamps, it is noticeable that the lamp has a high energy efficiency. LED lamps do not lose energy when warming up. This allows an LED lamp to be up to 90% more efficient than an incandescent lamp. Because LED bulbs are so energy efficient, they require less electricity to produce the same amount of light. They are therefore primarily energy-efficient.

In contrast to other forms of lighting, LED lamps are significantly more expensive to buy. This can be a barrier for many people to buy LED bulbs.
